I always appreciate your thoughtful posts, even on LinkedIN. Totally agree. I love using AI, yet it feels like a useful tool and not the end of design/product/engineering. Certainly not the end of art and music or film production.
The nuance is always lost. Too much to read, not catchy enough, not compelling enough. The hype is pretty unbearable now. I was able to easily get rid of webflow for personal use, but that’s still a solid platform for small/medium business.
We need more nuanced discussions and to get past the hyperbole so we can focus on people needs. The ole human in the HCI.
Great post. The confidence theater is real! But I'm curious: what scares us more...admitting AI is a tool we're still learning to use, or admitting that the human judgment required to use it well can't be automated? Because that's what I notice underneath the hype. Everyone's racing to prove they have the AI figured out so nobody notices that what actually matters is knowing which problems AI solves and which it doesn't. That's not sexy. That's not scalable. That's judgment.
This is the actual moat, and I'd sharpen it: the judgment shows up mostly as deciding what not to point AI at. In client work the expensive mistakes come from automating a problem that quietly needed a human call, so the skill is subtractive, knowing where to stop. That never demos well, which is exactly why it stays valuable. The people racing to look like they've figured AI out are usually the ones who haven't yet hit the failure that teaches them where its judgment ends.
Yes to this. I have been wanting deeply to see more people talk about reps, things that break, what Moved the needle, where we are still relying on the fundamentals. Once this becomes more authentic, i guess the positives will bring “true” excitement balanced with pragmatism. Not having the existing pre AI “distraction” problem to be on stereiods!
Yes, and don't forget to think while using AI. We don't need regurgitating of AI masking as actual thought processes. AI is more useful when it helps you think at a higher level. If you are using it without using your brain then AI is training you to become an AI bot.
